The Inspiration: Have you been to Cadillac Mountain? From October through March, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is where the first rays of daylight touch the United States. You can hike or drive there to see it, but we were lazy hikers and didn’t get up for sunrise. In my opinion, the view is worth the visit any time of day. Acadia NP is also a perfect place for stargazing, there isn’t a lot of developed land nearby and the stars literally pierce the sky.
One summer my husband and I took a long weekend with friends to Acadia National Park when our daughter was just a toddler. Acadia was beautiful with its tall spruces-fir coastal forests, mossy wetlands and rocky shores rising from the ocean. I still remember the salt-tinged air, mingled with fir and balsam on those bright blue sky days. We hiked the Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail, a cool, breezy path that crosses Cadillac Mountain with lots of oceanside views, daughter in a backpack carrier, all smiles. We played in the ocean at Sand Beach – the water was icy cold, but that didn’t stop most people from jumping in. Later we visited Thunder Hole to watch the ocean water shoot into the air. Back in town we feasted on lobstah roll (I’m pretty sure a phonetic spelling is appropriate here), soft-shell clams and oysters. Ok, gotta put Maine back on the travel list.
Inspired by its namesake island in Acadia National Park, Mount Desert is a scent reminiscent of cool and mysteriously dark waters, kelp and deep sea corals, and mossy firs cedars. For me, Mount Desert recalls days spent swimming in chilly New England waters and exploring the boreal forests of Acadia.
